Tôkyô monogatari (1953)
An elderly couple take a trip to Tokyo to visit their children, who feel burdened by their presence. Deliberately paced meditation on grown children’s relationship to their parents. The storytelling feels impressionistic, an accumulation of small moments that add up to a larger picture. The old couple’s plight (as well as their widowed daughter-in-law’s) was touching and kept my interest, but by the end, I didn’t feel as though I had watched something very significant.
