The Orphanage

El orfanato (The Orphanage) (2007)

A woman moves with her family into the now-defunct orphanage she grew up in, where her son acquires a new imaginary friend. This loses a bit of impact because of its resemblance to several other films where the protagonist has to figure out what the supernatural forces want (Poltergeist, The Sixth Sense, The Others, The Ring, Hide and Seek). That being said, it’s an effective example of the genre, with several scary scenes, and an emotional resolution.
