The House of the Devil

The House of the Devil (2009)

In the 1980s, on the night of a lunar eclipse, a college student accepts a babysitting job. Writer/director Ti West imitates the look and feel of low-budget horror films from the early eighties, but he doesn’t do it thoroughly enough for his film to qualify as homage or parody. What’s left is a horror film that takes way too long to set the stage. At least, before impatience sets in, the film succeeds in creating a creepy atmosphere.

I hate when a horror movie drags on too long. Or when everything is normal for 60 minutes then suddenly the 7 year old daughter is doing the stutter walk from the Ring. I love horror movies, but few people make them any more. Slasher films don’t count as horror for me and that’s what most horror films are today. Don’t get me started on sparkly vampires… What are you favorite Horror movies Claude?

Rosemary’s Baby, Psycho, Poltergeist, Near Dark, The Birds, Night of the Living Dead, Freaks, The Exorcist, and The Blair Witch Project top the list. I’m also a fan of the Francis Ford Coppola Dracula (though I really wish he’d cast someone other than Keanu Reeves as Harker). In recent years, Paranormal Activity scared the crap out of me.

Also of note: the Danish/Swedish mini-series The Kingdom, the 1956 and 1978 versions of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the 1942 Cat People, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, An American Werewolf in London, Tremors, Scream, Frailty, The Descent, The Dawn of the Dead (both versions) and The Day of the Dead, Hellraiser, Cloverfield…

      Have you seen all those?

I am scared more by supernatural horror than psychological horror. Being a kid in the 70s I saw all the cheesy horror movies. Do you remember the Don’t movies?? Don’t Look in the Basement, Don’t Look under the Bed, Don’t look in the closet… Horror movies based upon not doing something. Most were bad, but all scared the hell out of me. Especially the Don’t Go in the Basement movie.. animated body parts trapping you in a dark basement only to make you “like” them.

I saw many of those you listed. Exorcist (scared the hell out of me), Poltergeist, Rosemary’s Baby, Blair Witch,Hell Raiser (1 thru?).. Then there were ones like Hell House, The Omen Series, The Thing, Phantasm, Demon Seed, It’s Alive, .. there are so many. The last short in the Trilogy of Terror.. that scared me for months.

I thing the Paranormal Activities series is brilliant. They know exactly what scares you. What is real. The thump, bump, in the house. All things we have experienced, but instead of logical explanations, it is the dark evil thing that we thought. I have read they are making a 4th one.. I hope it is not one too many.
