Kicking and Screaming

Kicking and Screaming (1995)

Some friends who have just graduated from college find themselves unsure of what to do with their lives. This is an accurate portrayal of a certain type of college student/graduate, but there’s a reason there aren’t a lot of movies made about them. The characters are interchangeable, insufferable hipsters whose mannered dialogue is so swathed in irony and sarcasm that all traces of real personality have vanished.

Since I was unable to personally punch them in the face, I kept waiting for them to get their onscreen comeuppance, but the flashbacks seem to imply we’re supposed to care about these people. Writer/director Noah Baumbach gave them noxiously clever one-liners but failed to humanize them. Moments of humour and actual emotion poke through the surface once in a while.
