City of God

Cidade de Deus (2002)

A young man comes of age in a violent slum outside of Rio de Janeiro.

Saga of a group of friends and enemies is very stylish, which actually works against the film. It’s difficult to get deeply involved with the fate of the characters when the storytelling is so snazzy (Goodfellas suffered from a similar problem). Still, the story of those characters is compelling, and the movie does offer an inside look into the kind of place most of us will never go. There is one harrowing scene where a boy gets pressured to commit a horrific act of violence.

J’avais moi aussi bien aimé ce film à l’époque.
